OUR STORY

Every name has a beginning.

Maverick Stables was not created from a name chosen for a business. Its story began much earlier — with family, horses and a name that has travelled with us through different chapters of our lives.

What started as Maverick Manor eventually became Maverick Stables. Along the way, horses and breeding became an increasingly important part of our story, while the meaning behind the name remained remarkably fitting.

For us, Maverick represents independence: the willingness to think for ourselves, to make considered choices and to follow our own path. That idea still reflects the way we approach our horses and breeding today.

Our story is one of different chapters, but with a clear connection between them — family, horses and generations.

01 — WHERE THE NAME BEGAN

The story behind Maverick.

The name Maverick has been part of our family’s story for much longer than Maverick Stables itself.

The word originally became associated with unbranded cattle in North America. Its origins are linked to Samuel Maverick, a Texas rancher who became known for leaving his cattle unbranded. Over time, the word developed a broader meaning: an independent individual — someone willing to think differently and choose their own path.

For our family, the name gained a more personal meaning during our father’s internship in Canada. There, an unbranded calf whose mother was unknown was referred to as a maverick.

The word stayed with him. Years later, when our family dairy farm needed a name, that memory became the inspiration for:

Maverick Manor.

What began as the name of the farm would eventually travel with us into an entirely new chapter — and become Maverick Stables.

An independent individual who chooses their own path.
02 — FROM MAVERICK MANOR TO MAVERICK STABLES

A new chapter.

In 2014, our family’s dairy farm was sold. It marked the end of one chapter, but the name Maverick remained.

As our lives increasingly became centred around horses, the name evolved with us. Maverick Manor became Maverick Stables.

The transition from dairy farming to horses brought a new direction, but the meaning we had come to associate with Maverick remained just as relevant: thinking independently, making considered choices and being prepared to follow our own path.

Over time, Maverick Stables developed into what it is today — a place where breeding, raising young horses and caring for mares come together, built on experience from the past while continually looking towards the future.

The business changed. The name evolved. The meaning remained.

03 — THE BEGINNING OF OUR BREEDING STORY

Rosa-Lott.

Long before Maverick Stables took its current form, horse breeding had already become part of our family’s story.

Rosa-Lott (Julio Mariner xx × Saluut) was our father’s first broodmare and marked the beginning of his breeding journey. She was a mare with an interesting pedigree, but also one who distinguished herself in her own right.

At four years old, Rosa-Lott received a first premium at the local studbook inspection in IJsselmuiden. She was awarded 78 points for her conformation and movement, with particular praise for her supple movement and appealing conformation. Her result earned her an invitation to the National Mare Inspection.

Behind Rosa-Lott stood an established Gelderland mare line. Her dam, the ster mare Zofia (Saluut), competed at Z level in jumping. The line continued through the ster and performance mare Tironetje (Duc de Normandie), followed by the ster preferent Ironetje (Eclatant) and the ster mare Uronetje (Oran).

Rosa-Lott represents more to us than the first mare in a breeding programme. She marks the point where an interest in breeding became part of our family history — a foundation from which later horses and generations would follow.

Every breeding programme has a beginning. Ours started with Rosa-Lott.
04 — MAVERICK TODAY

The same name. A growing vision.

Today, Maverick Stables represents a new generation of our family’s story with horses and breeding.

What began with the first breeding decisions made years ago has continued to develop. Knowledge has grown, facilities have changed and new generations of horses have followed, but the willingness to look carefully at each individual horse and make considered choices has remained.

Our breeding programme today looks beyond the next foal. We consider pedigree and dam lines alongside conformation, health, character, performance and genetic diversity, always asking what a combination may contribute not only to one horse, but potentially to the generations that follow.

The same long-term thinking shapes the way we raise our young horses. We believe development takes time, and that good foundations are built through appropriate movement, social interaction, consistent handling and the opportunity for each horse to develop as an individual.

Maverick has always represented choosing your own path. Today, that does not mean doing things differently simply for the sake of being different. It means being willing to question, learn and make the choice we believe best serves the horse and its future.

The name connects where we came from with where we are going.
05 — THE NEXT GENERATION

This is where our story continues.

Every generation adds another chapter to the story.

The mares in our breeding programme carry generations of breeding decisions behind them. Their foals bring those lines forward, while every new combination gives us the opportunity to consider what we want to preserve, strengthen or introduce for the future.

Some of the horses that shaped our story belong to the past. Others are growing up at Maverick today. Together, they form a continuous line between where our breeding journey began and where it may lead next.

We cannot know exactly what each generation will bring. What we can do is make every decision with care, remain curious and continue to learn from the horses and generations that came before.

Because for us, breeding has never been only about the next foal.

It is about what we leave for the generations that follow.
