Maverick Stables is a breeding and youngstock stable in the Netherlands, built around a long-term approach to breeding, development and horsemanship.
We believe that good horses are shaped by more than pedigree or performance alone. Genetics, health, environment, management, experience and the people around the horse all contribute to the bigger picture.
That is why our decisions are made with both the individual horse and its future in mind. From selecting breeding combinations to raising young horses, we aim to create strong foundations without losing sight of health, character, confidence and longevity.
For us, horse-first development is not a separate part of what we do. It is the principle that connects everything.
OUR PHILOSOPHY
There is no single formula for breeding or developing a good horse. Every horse is an individual, and every decision has to be considered within that individual context.
We believe in a thoughtful, patient and respectful approach, where health, soundness, confidence, character and longevity are just as important as performance.
For us, horse-first development means observing before deciding, understanding before asking and being prepared to adapt when the horse tells us something different.
By combining knowledge, experience and practical horsemanship, we aim to give every horse the best possible opportunity to develop into a healthy, capable and confident individual — now and in the future.
Our ambitions are shaped around the horse, never the other way around.
OUR VALUES
Our values are not separate from the way we work. They shape the decisions we make around breeding, development, management and the everyday handling of our horses.
Horsemanship
Good horsemanship begins with observation. Understanding a horse’s behaviour, development, strengths and limitations allows us to adapt our approach to the individual.
Clear communication, consistency and timing matter. Every interaction teaches a horse something, whether we intend it to or not.
We aim to build confident, willing horses that understand what is expected of them while remaining able to think for themselves.
AMBITION
Ambition, to us, is not about asking more from the horse. It is about continually asking more from ourselves.
We remain curious, keep learning and regularly evaluate the way we work. From breeding decisions and daily management to facilities and youngstock development, we believe there is always an opportunity to improve.
Progress matters, but never at the expense of the horse.
INTEGRITY
Integrity means making decisions we can stand behind — even when the easiest, most fashionable or commercially attractive option is not necessarily the right one.
We believe in being transparent about the choices we make and putting the horse’s health, welfare and long-term interests at the centre of those decisions.
What is right for the horse remains more important than what is convenient for us.
FORESIGHT
Breeding and developing horses requires us to look beyond the immediate result. Decisions made today can influence not only one horse, but potentially generations that follow.
That is why we consider long-term health, soundness, genetic diversity and sustainable development alongside quality and performance.
Our aim is to make decisions that still make sense tomorrow — not only today.
OUR BREEDING
Every breeding decision starts with the individual mare. We look at her pedigree, dam line, conformation, performance, health and character before considering what a stallion could add — or where a combination may need balance.
For us, a successful match is about more than producing an attractive foal or following the stallion of the moment. We consider the genetic diversity within a pedigree and the qualities a combination may pass on, because breeding decisions made today can continue to influence generations to come.
That sometimes means choosing a less obvious direction. We are prepared to look beyond disciplines, trends and conventional combinations when we believe another approach may better complement the mare and contribute something valuable to the next generation.
Our goal is not simply to breed the next horse. It is to make thoughtful, sustainable combinations with health, quality and the future of the bloodline in mind.
DEVELOPMENT
A young horse is learning long before formal training begins. Every time we handle a horse, move it, introduce something new or ask it to respond, we are shaping the way it understands people and pressure.
That is why we believe good foundations start with clear communication and consistency. We want our young horses to learn to pay attention, respond willingly and understand what is being asked of them — without taking away their confidence or ability to think.
We do not expect a young horse to know something it has never been taught. New situations are introduced step by step, giving the horse the opportunity to understand the answer rather than simply react to pressure.
Respect and trust go hand in hand. A horse should respect our space and respond to our direction, while being able to trust that we will be clear, fair and consistent in return.
The goal is not to create a horse that simply complies. It is to develop a confident, responsive and willing horse with the foundation to handle new situations and continue learning throughout its life.
The goal is not to create a horse that simply complies. It is to develop a confident, responsive and willing horse with the foundation to handle new situations and continue learning throughout its life.
Alongside this education, turnout, movement, social interaction, nutrition and appropriate care support the physical development a young horse needs to thrive.
What we teach today becomes the foundation for tomorrow.
