Every mare is different. Her reproductive stage, history, condition and individual needs all influence the care and guidance she requires.
At Maverick Stables, we provide individual guidance throughout the reproductive journey — from preparation and insemination to pregnancy, foaling and the important first period with her foal.
With knowledge, experience and close daily observation, we adapt our management where needed and work together with trusted veterinary professionals. Throughout every stage, the health and welfare of mare and foal remain at the centre of our approach.
INDIVIDUAL GUIDANCE
EXPERIENCE & KNOWLEDGE
MARE &
FOAL FIRST
Every mare follows her own journey. Whether she comes to us for breeding guidance, stays with us during pregnancy or arrives in preparation for foaling, her care is tailored to her individual needs and stage of reproduction.
Throughout her stay, we combine close daily observation with consistent routines and professional veterinary support when required. Changes in condition, behaviour or pregnancy are noticed early, allowing management and care to be adjusted where necessary.
As foaling approaches, attention shifts towards preparation and monitoring. After birth, our focus extends naturally to both mare and foal, supporting the important first hours and days and giving them a calm and well-managed start together.
From the first breeding decisions to the first days of a new life, every stage matters.
Practical Information
Every mare is different, and so is the care she requires throughout the reproductive journey. From breeding and pregnancy to foaling and the first period with her foal, our management is adapted to the individual mare and the stage she is in.
Close daily observation, consistent routines and collaboration with trusted professionals form the basis of her care throughout her stay.
The breeding process starts with understanding the individual mare and her reproductive cycle. We closely follow her development throughout the cycle and coordinate the practical planning around reproductive examinations, scanning and insemination.
Where veterinary expertise is required, we work closely with our veterinarian. By combining daily observation with reproductive monitoring, each step can be planned around the individual mare rather than following a fixed schedule.
As pregnancy progresses, the needs of the mare change. Throughout her stay, we closely observe her general wellbeing, body condition and behaviour, while nutrition, movement and daily management are adjusted where necessary.
Our aim is to provide a consistent environment in which the mare can progress through her pregnancy naturally, while remaining attentive to changes that may require additional care or professional assessment.
Good mare management also means ensuring that professional care can be provided when it is needed. We coordinate veterinary examinations, farrier visits and other necessary professional appointments during the mare’s stay.
We handle and hold the mare during these appointments, allowing routine care to take place without the owner needing to be present each time. Where appropriate, we work together with the professionals involved to ensure continuity in her care.
As the expected foaling date approaches, our attention increasingly shifts towards preparation and closer observation. The mare’s management is adapted to this final stage of pregnancy and the foaling environment is prepared so that everything is ready when the moment arrives.
We believe good preparation creates calm when it matters most. By knowing the individual mare and closely following the changes that occur towards the end of pregnancy, we can prepare for foaling while allowing her as much peace and normality as possible.
Around foaling, close observation becomes particularly important. We monitor the mare and the progression of the foaling process, allowing her the space to foal naturally while remaining ready to provide practical assistance when necessary.
The wellbeing of both mare and foal guides every decision. If a situation requires veterinary assessment or intervention, professional veterinary support can be involved accordingly.
Our care does not end once the foal has been born. The first hours are an important period for both mare and foal, and we closely observe their recovery, behaviour and first interactions.
Attention is given to the important early milestones, including the foal standing, nursing and receiving colostrum. The mare is also closely observed and cared for as she recovers from foaling. At approximately 24 hours of age, a SNAP Foal test is used as part of our routine to assess the transfer of maternal antibodies through the colostrum.
During the following days, management is gradually adapted to the new mare-and-foal combination, giving them the opportunity to settle into a calm and consistent routine.
